Please note, I'm very much a beginner at Eclipse so I may not understand the consequences of deleting but it seems to be working well for me so far. Would you like to answer one of these unanswered questions instead?by renaming the variables and leaving the references untouched, or is this unsafe?

Creating a new "drawables" folder causes Eclipse to throw an error because it would technically lead to a duplicate class - hence the little red cross on your "drawables" folder.
You should move all your images into one of these pre-existing folders then delete the drawables folder you created.

You're not supposed to modify the file, but it doesn't say anything about deleting it (not that I've seen, anyway).
I've found that deleting usually fixes my resource-related problems because Eclipse immediately regenerates the file with the integer values properly assigned. Because it has attracted low-quality or spam answers that had to be removed, posting an answer now requires 10 reputation on this site (the association bonus does not count).
If you have the auto-build option on, try unchecking it and building the application manually. I even tried starting the projects all over again but still nada...
